Our Village
Tochni
The beauty of the picturesque Tochni village attracts even the most demanding locals. It is a very small village of around 350 people. The center of the village has not been affected by modern intrusions, and what time has destroyed is been carefully restored and preserved.
The name of the village is said to have been derived from the word "Techni" which means art. The ancient Tochnicians were famous for cutting and curving the stones. A fine example of this stone work is the church of Saints Eleni & Constantinos in the village square.
Historic Church in the village square
Saint Konstantinos & Eleni
TThe Church is dedicated to Saints Konstantinos & Eleni , because it is believed that the initial small church was built by Saint Eleni , mother of Byzantine Emperor Konstantinos on her return from Jerusalem on her quest to find the Holy Cross in 326 A.C. Her ship stopped at Vasilopotamos , and she noticed that the Holy Cross was missing. She saw a light where the Church is now, she went there and found the Holy Cross. She built a church upon the bridge and in the following years the church was renovated and expanded to what it is today.
The commemoration day for these 2 Saints is on May 21s .On that day every year people named Eleni, Helen, Kostas etc celebrate their name day. There is a festival in the village on that day with traditional gastronomical delicacies and fun activities for children.
Museum
Ecclesiastical Museum
There is also a small ecclesiastical museum in the church yard with various ecclesiastical objects and icons.
Well noted is a gospel dating back to the 15th century and icons by a local village artist “Lukas o Tochnitis” that date back to the 17th century. His pantings are distinguished from the way he was painting St Mary (PANAGIA).He paints her with slim high eyebrows and slim elegant hands.
